With No. 10/36, Kaspar Laurenz turns his attention to the Ellmauer Tor, which emerges within a largely abstract composition of color. The painting evolved over an extended period, developing layer by layer into an autonomous field of color in which color, materiality, and composition determine the visual experience.

Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay of the horizontal bands of color in the lower section of the painting, which function as abstract compositional elements that structure the pictorial space. No. 10/36 is the only work in the series to feature three stacked color bands. They expand the spatial effect of the composition and mark a distinctive moment in the formal development of the series.

The work is built from an exceptionally large number of paint layers, with cadmium pigments in particular giving the surface its remarkable luminosity. At various stages, older layers were cut back with a scalpel, revealing underlying colors once again. This interplay of applying, reworking, and uncovering paint creates a richly layered materiality and makes the painting’s extended process of creation directly perceptible.

Although the Ellmauer Tor remains recognizable as a landscape motif, it recedes behind the painterly exploration of color, light, and surface, becoming the vehicle for an autonomous abstract visual language.
