With No. 35/36, Kaspar Laurenz explores a tranquil summer scene at the Wilder Kaiser mountain range. A reduced palette of various greens and the cool blue shadows cast by the rocks defines the painting's atmosphere. The restrained color scheme draws the eye to the subtle nuances of light and space, lending the work a special serenity.
This painting marks the first appearance of the green band at the bottom edge of the canvas—an abstracted compositional element that would significantly shape the later works in the series "36 Moods of the Wilder Kaiser." It increasingly detaches the foreground from its landscape function and marks an important step toward the reduced visual language that would become characteristic of the series.
With its multi-layered glazes and fine brushwork, the painting combines representational landscape with an increasingly abstract understanding of color and composition.
