With No. 9/36, Kaspar Laurenz created his first monochrome painting. The work is painted exclusively with black and white pigments and focuses entirely on the effects of light, contrast, and structure.

The painting depicts the Wilder Kaiser in a misty atmosphere following heavy rainfall. Particularly characteristic are the bright streams of water running across the dark rock faces. From a distance, these streams appear as fine white lines in the stone, giving the mountain a rugged and striking presence.

To make these flowing structures visible, the still-wet paint was deliberately blurred. This creates soft transitions that evoke the movement of water running down the rock and give the painting a modern, gestural visual language.

The deliberate restriction to black and white makes clear that the atmosphere of a landscape is not conveyed through color alone. Light, material, and the movement of the brush come to the foreground and shape the character of the image. Within the series 36 Moods of the Wilder Kaiser, No. 9/36 marks an important step toward a more reduced and independent painterly language.
