The Wilder Kaiser No. 11/36 depicts a deeply wintry morning atmosphere immediately after fresh snowfall. Cold, shimmering light moves through the landscape and is rendered in bright turquoise, ultramarine blue, and soft yellow tones that merge into a finely balanced harmony of color. The painting conveys the stillness of a clear winter morning, when light refracts across the snow and immerses the mountain landscape in an almost weightless atmosphere.

The color was built up over an extended period through numerous delicate layers. Countless brushstrokes overlap to create a complex pictorial structure from which the light appears to emerge from within the painting itself. The work’s luminosity is created not only by the colors used, but by the interplay of transparent layers of paint.

With The Wilder Kaiser No. 11/36, the formal elements developed for the series reach a point of maturity. The horizontal abstract band of color along the lower edge of the painting, together with the subtly darkened margins, are used here for the first time in the balanced form that would come to characterize the subsequent works in the series. At the same time, it is the first work in the series to be executed on a deeper canvas and deliberately presented without a frame. As a result, the painting takes on the presence of an autonomous object, further intensifying its luminous effect.

The work was first exhibited in 36 Moods of the Wilder Kaiser at Studio G10 in Kitzbühel. There, together with The Wilder Kaiser No. 12/36, No. 13/36, and No. 14/36, it formed an ensemble of four carefully coordinated light atmospheres exploring different facets of winter light at the Wilder Kaiser. In combination, the four paintings create a continuous chromatic resonance and emphasize the serial character of the body of work.
